The automotive industry has been calling on the government to ease zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) legislation to assist UK car manufacturers in the transition to electric vehicles.
Transitioning to EVs plays a critical role in reducing UK vehicle emissions. The government’s current zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate requires all new cars and vans to be zero emission by 2035.
It also sets out the percentage of new zero emission cars and vans manufacturers are required to produce each year – with 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain to be zero emission by 2030, increasing to 100% by 2035. At present car manufacturers also have to ensure 28% of their new car sales in 2025 are zero-emission or face a penalty of £15,000 per non-compliant vehicle.
Government support is seen as vital to allow the industry to achieve these ambitious goals. Alongside pushing for softer ZEV targets, the industry is also calling for additional incentives to encourage more people to switch to EVs.
There are now signs that the industry’s message has been heard, and it is hoped that an announcement will be forthcoming in due course.
