Renewable Diesel (HVO) is playing an important role in helping decarbonise the logistics sector. Many UK Transport operators and fleet managers now view HVO as a viable interim alternative to traditional diesel and a practical way to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in their fleets.
HVO, a widely available drop-in alternative to traditional diesel, can cut greenhouse gas emissions from a vehicle by as much as 90% compared to standard diesel. It is also fully compatible with the majority of diesel engines.
Numerous fleet operators have already made the switch, such as Wren Kitchens, Howdens, PepsiCo UK and FedEx, while others are planning to start using HVO over the course of the coming year.
Following a three-month trial Wren Kitchens switched 94% of its HGV fleet to HVO. Lee Holmes, Director at Wren Kitchens Transport and Logistics, said: “The introduction of HVO is another exciting milestone in our long-term sustainability plan and plays a pivotal part in delivering against the government’s target for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
Howdens has introduced HVO as part of its decarbonisation strategy. Gareth Sterland, Head of Transport at Howdens, said: “We will absolutely deliver on our carbon reduction promises. The move towards HVO, LNG and electric vehicles demonstrates our commitment to CO2 reduction across our expanding fleet and network.”
Working in collaboration with its transport partner PepsiCo UK is replacing diesel with HVO to power over a million miles of HGV journeys. HVO will be used in trucks travelling between the Quaker Oats mill in Scotland and Leicester as part of PepsiCo UK’s goal to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 1,200 tonnes across its UK supply chain.
Following a successful trial FedEx has switched from using traditional diesel to HVO in 170 of its trucks at three UK sites as part of a push toward more sustainable operations. According to James Richards, Senior Manager of Road Network Operations at FedEx UK, the UK is the first country where the company has been able to scale up the use of HVO. He hopes the switch will become permanent as part of FedEx’s wider goal to reach carbon-neutral operations by 2040.
The transport industry is in transition and operators are being asked to make reducing carbon emissions a priority. They see HVO as a practical, straightforward interim solution to tide them over until other options, such as EV or hydrogen HGVs, become more accessible.
Silvey Fleet is keen to support customers as they transition to greener alternative fuels. Renewable Diesel (HVO) is now available on several of our fuel card networks, including UK Fuels, Key Fuels and Fastfuel fuel cards, providing ready access to this more sustainable fuel alternative.
